2022 Consumer Portfolio
February 2023: Article by Jenny Lo, MCoE Consumer Portfolio Manager
Background
The Consumer Portfolio includes member-facing MCoE certified apps used by our KP members. These apps are custom developed and designed here at Kaiser Permanente or may be apps carefully reviewed and selected from the App Store and/or Google Play with our members in mind.
By the numbers
The consumer portfolio was quite busy in 2022 with the custom app releases as well as the third-party member facing apps. We had more engagements, certifications and releases than the previous year. The high volume in releases included TestFlight/Google Beta submissions, dot releases and hot fixes in 2022.

2021: 117 resolved/closed Consumer app engagements, 71 certs, 285 releases
2022: 149 resolved/closed Consumer app engagements, 80 certs, 310 releases
2022 Memorable Highlights
Updates to some of our custom consumer apps released in 2022.
KP VR: In 2020, the Sales Mobility Team partnered with Miguel Villarreal in National Sales and Account Management and Platform XR, a mixed reality platform development vendor, to publish a virtual reality mobile application of the digital experiences found at www.kp.org/vr. These digital experiences, representing all of our markets were created to support engagements with employer customers, consultant partners, and members and prospective members, especially during open enrollment.
Helping our audiences understand the value of Kaiser Permanente can be difficult because we combine care and coverage in an integrated model – which makes us different from other healthcare options. Doctors, hospitals, and our health plan work together to provide convenient, high-quality, and affordable health care. Using the online (www.kp.org/vr) and now mobile experience (search for KP VR on mobile app stores) – no matter where you are – enables you to experience our KP story across each region with 360-degree videos of our facilities, learn about our award-winning specialty care and telehealth services, and watch short videos about our members and care teams. Choose your own adventure with behind-the-scenes access.
The MCoE partnered with Miguel and the vendor to consult, certify and deploy two unified mobile applications (iOS and Android) to enhance the convenience and overall user experience, which were deployed to the public app stores, iTunes and Google Play Store, in June 2022.
The apps have undergone cyber security and UX/UI reviews to ensure the app icon, UI, video content, graphic, data points, fonts, etc adhere to KP Brand and Accessibility standards. If you haven’t done so already, download the app and have fun exploring Kaiser Permanente! Choose your own adventure, and see how KP makes health care simpler and more convenient in innovative ways.
Another custom KP app included as part of the up tick in releases last year include KP WA. The following updates were completed in 2022:

In addition to the apps mentioned above, we had a total of seven KP Mobile iOS and Android releases including hotfixes and updates last year; now with over 10 million downloads from both the App Store and Google Play! You can refer to a couple of our release articles with the latest features for our members: KP Mobile 5.2 and KP Mobile 5.9
Trends and the Future
In 2022, there were several requests in the mental wellness space for our young members at KP. Branched off from Project Chamai, we have Youth Chamai. Quite a few apps such as BeMe, Calm Harm, Rootd, Shine, SparkRx, Tiimo were all certified for use by our younger members at KP. There were also inquiries with apps to help educate our patients.
